Dredging planned at marina; ramp fee reduced to $20

Norfolk plans to spend $530,000 to dredge at county marinas in Port Rowan and Port Dover.

Dredging the channel at Port Rowan Harbour Marina is budgeted to cost $410,000.

Dredging at Port Dover Harbour Marina is forecast at $120,000.

Port Rowan marina was last dredged in 2012 and Port Dover marina in 2013.

Lake Erie’s water levels were high for five years but began declining in fall 2023, county council was told April 23.

Work will likely be done in the fall, operations general manager Bill Cridland said.

Permits might take months to get and will be valid for two years.

Dredging can’t start until at least July because of restrictions on fish habitat.

Councillors set Port Rowan Harbour Marina’s ramp fee at $20 for the 2025 boating season.

That’s down from $30 approved for Port Rowan and Port Dover earlier this year.

The $30 fee would have made Port Rowan marina uncompetitive with private marinas, Port Rowan Coun. Tom Masschaele said.

County staff will consider installing a parking payment machine to collect ramp fees in Port Rowan.

A machine in Port Dover currently isn’t used because of construction on Harbour Street.

Port Rowan has used an honour system for years, collecting $6,000 for 300 ramp fees last year.
