Author Douglas Glover speaking at next Heritage Association meeting

By Bob Wood

An award-winning author of fiction will be speaking at the Port Rowan South Walsingham Heritage Association’s (PRSWHA) next meeting on April 27.

Douglas Glover grew up on a tobacco farm just north of Waterford. He won the Governor General’s award for fiction in 2003 for his novel Elle.

According to the Canadian Encyclopedia, “Douglas Glover is an eclectic man of letters whose long writing career has embraced a variety of forms.”

Born in 1948, Glover has been a novelist, short story writer, critic, editor, and teacher.

He’ll be reading bits from his fiction that refer to Long Point, Norfolk in the War of 1812 and other topics that will be of interest to the local audience.

Glover also plans to talk about the events and research that he turned into fiction. In his fiction, he has dealt with John Troyer, Port Rowan medical practitioner and exorcist. He has also written about prisoners of war brought back from the U.S. during the War of 1812, the Battle of Malcolm Mills (the last land battle of the War of 1812 which took place near present day community of Oakland), and more.

On his mother’s side, he descends from the McCalls and the McInneses in St. Williams and Vittoria. In addition to Elle, Glover has published three novels, five short story collections, and three books of nonfiction.

Glover has a Substack (an online platform) called Out & Back. Here he presents stories like A Family Massacre regarding the 1832 Sovereign murders in Round Plains.

The author lives in Vermont, for which he apologizes profusely.

The PRSWHA convenes Sunday, April 27, at 2 p.m. at Neal Memorial United Church.

The cost is $10 per person and free for members.

Refreshments and a short Heritage Association meeting will follow Glover’s talk.
